Every day, a Dutch person uses 123.8 litres of clean water for drinking, washing, scrubbing and rinsing. Companies use water too: to cool machines in the production process or to clean products. Nearly all of this water ends up in the sewage system, where it mixes with rain water. Then we call it waste water. It’s dirty and has to be cleaned. This takes place in sewage treatment plants.
When companies discharge a lot of water, and/or seriously polluted water into the sewage system, they often decide to clean it themselves. This allows considerable savings to be made in the taxes levied on water purification.
