Biogas plants
Biogas is a gas mixture that is created as a result of biological enzymatic processes. The main components of biogas are methane and carbon dioxide. The gas is created as a result of fermentation (an anaerobic process) of organic material such as manure, sewage sludge, activated sludge or dumped household waste. In the latter case we speak of landfill gas. Digestate remains as a residual product (the wet end product).
Due to its biological origin, biogas is a sustainable energy source. The use of (cleaned) biogas is also encouraged because of the favorable combustion properties of methane. Today, more and more biogas is used in developed countries from both wastewater treatment plants and landfills.
By cleaning biogas, the quality of the biogas can be improved (in particular by removing water and hydrogen sulphide). An application takes place, for example, in combined heat and power plants and as a car fuel (comparable to CNG). In the Netherlands, biogas is upgraded to green gas and blended into the natural gas network.
